Mango Rum Lassi - a tropical cocktail that’s a cross between a smoothie and a milkshake, featuring frozen mango, probiotic-rich kefir and your favorite spiced rum.
Jump to:
A lassi is a yogurt-based drink that’s popular in India. It’s most commonly made with yogurt, spices and sometimes fruit, with mango being one of the most popular fruit additions.
This lassi is so delicious. Fruity, creamy - good even without the rum, but it certainly adds an element of fun!
Perfect for when you want a tropical cocktail, but don’t want the sugary or soda-based variety.
🧾 Ingredients
Frozen mango - you can use pre-frozen mango or cut and freeze your own mango.
Banana - this adds body and creaminess to this drink.
Kefir - kefir is a fermented yogurt beverage. It’s like yogurt, but its texture is a cross between yogurt and milk. It contains healthy probiotic bacteria that are good for gut health.
Coconut water - water from a green coconut (different than coconut milk!), coconut water has a subtle sweet, nutty flavor. It also has key nutrients like potassium. I like to use coconut water to give it just a little more tropical flavor, but regular water also works.
Dark/spiced rum - I like to try local spirits, but you can use your favorite dark or spiced rum. Simply omit the alcohol for a non-alcoholic mango lassi.
Honey - It adds a touch of sweetness. I find the honey isn’t necessary when you omit the rum, but if you’re making this a cocktail, I recommend adding in a bit of sweetener like honey or maple syrup.
Turmeric - turmeric contains many antioxidants and other beneficial compounds. It also adds that bright yellow color. It will stain so be careful not to spill it.
Cinnamon - it adds great flavor and health benefits! Ideally, look for Ceylon cinnamon, but any variety will work.
🍹 How to make a mango rum lassi
1 - Blend. Combine the mango, banana, kefir, coconut water, rum, honey, turmeric, cinnamon, salt in a blender. Blend until smooth. Add more coconut water and honey as desired.
2 - Garnish with fresh mint leaves and a sprinkle of cinnamon, or if you’re feeling extra spicy, some ancho chili powder. Enjoy!
💭 Tips, Tricks and Tools
Tools: blender
Adjust the sweetness: This Mango Rum Lassi isn’t super sweet so feel free to add more honey or maple syrup as needed.
Purchase high-quality ingredients: Consider getting a quality alcohol. If you buy from the bottom of the barrel, your drink may taste accordingly... No need to go for top-shelf either, but find a nice middle ground. Go for something local to your area if you can!
Substitutions - you can use yogurt instead of kefir, fresh or frozen mango, and regular water instead of coconut water.
🥭 Nutrition
Mangos are packed with nutrients like zeaxanthin which can help protect against macular degeneration, and they also have beta-carotene and vitamin C, both of which are important for immune health.
Kefir is a fermented yogurt drink that has probiotics, aka healthy bacteria that can help promote a healthy gut and proper immune function.
This mango rum lassi has the probiotic benefits of kefir, but it still contains alcohol, so be sure to consume in moderation.

I didn’t have Kefir so I substituted buttermilk. Also used fresh super ripe sweet mango, and had no bananas 😟. Still this is a delicious cocktail that I rate as a KEEPER! I will definitely partake again and again! 5 STAR *
